They seem'd, to those who saw them meet,

他們平日的相遇，

The casual friends of every day;

像是交情不深的朋友；

Her smile was undisturb'd and sweet,

His courtesy was free and gay.

他的舉止隨意而不莊重。

But yet if one the other's name

但如果對(duì)方的姓名

In some unguarded moment heard,

在某個(gè)不經(jīng)意的瞬間響起，

The heart you thought so calm and tame

原以為無(wú)動(dòng)于衷的心

Would struggle like a captured bird:

會(huì)像被捕獲的鳥一樣掙扎：

And letters of mere formal phrase

僅僅是書信里客套的言語(yǔ)

Were blister'd with repeated tears,—

信紙就因行行的淚滴而皺起，——

And this was not the work of days,

這般情景并非出現(xiàn)于幾天光陰，

But had gone on for years and years!

而是年復(fù)一年的觸物傷情！

Alas, that love was not too strong

唉，對(duì)于少女的害羞和男人的自尊而言

For maiden shame and manly pride!

這段愛情不夠強(qiáng)烈！

Alas, that they delay'd so long

唉，當(dāng)彼此尋求的幸福就在身邊

The goal of mutual bliss beside!

他們卻耽誤了太長(zhǎng)時(shí)間！

Yet what no chance could then reveal,

那段無(wú)法表露的感情，

And neither would be first to own,

誰(shuí)都不愿率先坦承自己的愛意，

Let fate and courage now conceal,

如今現(xiàn)實(shí)只能讓人悔恨，

When truth could bring remorse alone.
